The Indian electric two-wheeler market is evolving rapidly, but interestingly, Japanese two-wheeler manufacturers have taken a cautious and relatively slow approach compared to homegrown and Chinese-backed startups. Brands like Honda and Suzuki entered the electric scooter space with premium pricing strategies, which limited their mass-market appeal. Yamaha, however, seems to have chosen a smarter and more collaborative route with the introduction of its first electric scooter for India, the Yamaha EC-06.

Instead of developing an electric scooter entirely from scratch, Yamaha partnered with Bengaluru-based River Mobility, a startup already known for its robust and practical electric scooter, the River Indie. This collaboration resulted in the Yamaha EC-06, a scooter that combines Yamaha’s performance-focused brand DNA with River’s EV engineering expertise. The EC-06 was first revealed in November 2025, and now, production has officially started at River Mobility’s manufacturing facility in Hoskote, Karnataka.

Yamaha’s Entry into the Indian EV Space

Unlike Honda’s earlier attempt with the Activa e and QC1, which relied heavily on battery swapping and premium subscription-based models, Yamaha’s EC-06 focuses on a more conventional ownership experience. Suzuki’s recently launched e-Access also sits in a high price bracket, making Yamaha’s approach stand out as more balanced and potentially practical for Indian buyers.

The Yamaha EC-06 is not just a rebadged River Indie. While it shares its core platform with the Indie, Yamaha has ensured that the scooter has a distinct identity. This approach allows Yamaha to enter the EV segment quickly while still offering something unique and aligned with its brand philosophy.

Production Begins at Hoskote Plant

Production of the Yamaha EC-06 has commenced at River Mobility’s state-of-the-art facility in Hoskote, Karnataka. This plant already manufactures the River Indie, and with Yamaha joining the production line, it highlights the growing trust and collaboration between the two companies. The start of production also strongly indicates that the official market launch of the EC-06 is not too far away.

Yamaha is expected to follow a phased rollout strategy, initially focusing on major urban markets where electric scooter adoption is higher, before expanding to other regions.

Design Philosophy and Visual Identity

Visually, the Yamaha EC-06 looks noticeably different from the River Indie. It features vertically stacked LED headlamps that give the scooter a modern and slightly aggressive front profile. The apron and side body panels are uniquely styled, clearly separating it from its donor model.

Unlike the River Indie, which is marketed as an “SUV of scooters” with a rugged and utility-focused character, the EC-06 takes a more urban and sporty approach. It gets a smaller seat and reduced under-seat storage, making it more compact and likely lighter. This design decision aligns with Yamaha’s emphasis on agility and riding fun rather than outright utility.

Chassis, Wheels, and Practicality

Despite the visual and positioning differences, the Yamaha EC-06 retains some strong hardware elements from the River Indie. It rides on large 14-inch alloy wheels, which are uncommon in the electric scooter segment. These wheels are wrapped in wide tyres, promising better stability, confident handling, and improved ride quality on Indian roads.

The scooter features a flat floorboard, adding everyday practicality for urban commuting. However, under-seat storage is limited to 24.5 litres, significantly less than the Indie’s massive 43-litre boot. This trade-off further reinforces the EC-06’s focus on a sporty and lightweight character rather than maximum cargo capacity.

Features and Equipment

In terms of features, the Yamaha EC-06 keeps things simple and functional. It comes equipped with an LCD instrument cluster that displays essential information such as speed, battery status, range, and riding mode. While it may not be the most advanced display in the segment, it prioritizes clarity and ease of use.
